LegiStorm: A Searchable Database of US Congressional Salaries,Gifts and Earmarks

LegiStorm is a free, searchable database of US Congressional Salaries,Staff salaries,Foreign Gifts and Earmarks,Financial Disclosures and Trips. LegiStorm touts itself as bringing transparency to the U.S. Congress by disseminating public documents and non-partisan information over the web.

From their About Us page:

LegiStorm launched in September 2006. Our web site is dedicated to providing a variety of important information about the US Congress.

Based on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, LegiStorm's first information product was a database of congressional staff salaries but we have now added other valuable information, such as the most comprehensive database of all privately financed trips taken by members of Congress and congressional staffers.

The information is provided in a strictly factual, non-partisan fashion. We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible. We expect this resource to be useful to journalists, researchers, lobbyists and current and would-be staffers - as well as regular citizens who simply want to know how their representatives spend public money.

This website is an excellent resource for those interested in who is spending what and how much they are making.

Obama's Budget Director Says "We'll Cut Pork After 2009 Spending Bill"

From the "Oops! Did We REALLY Promise That?" File:

Peter Orszag, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, told CNN's State of the Union with John King,"[Such bills(The Spending Bill)] will not happen when the president has the full legislative and appropriations process in place."

The Obama Administration faces mounting criticism over his support of the 410 Billion Dollar spending bill, which includes 8 Billion Dollars in "earmarks". Remember those things that Obama promised to do away with? Yeah, those. Better known as pork. Better known as chips to get Senators and Representatives re-elected.

Mr Orszag also had this to say, ""This is like your relief pitcher coming into the ninth inning and wanting to redo the whole game. Next year we're going to be the starting pitcher, and the game's going to be completely different."

Oooh, a baseball analogy! How quaint. And timely too.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor rejected the argument and reminded everyone that President Obama had vowed to take action against earmarks during the presidential campaign.

That he did. We remember it distinctly. As a matter of fact, we are quite sure it's on video somewhere, buried in the YouTube files.

Apparently, pork will be a thing of a past in the Federal Government. Just not right now. Maybe next year. That's a baseball reference too.
