Things are hopping on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion as thousands of people are flocking to the Jesus-Misericordieux Church to see a "divine phenomenon", as Antoinette, an 82 year old parishioner, called it. Apparently, the face of Jesus has appeared in the pleats of a cushion. The priest's chair cushion, no less.
Officials of the church have limited viewings to a few minutes as traffic has ground to a halt in the area. Believers and curious onlookers pulled out cameras to take pictures of the cushion attached to the priest's chair. Four tents have been put up outside the church so the faithful could follow mass.
The parish priest has said, "This is not a miracle, it's a sign of God."
A group of parishioners at a pre-Easter ceremony first noticed the face of Jesus on the cushion. The Bishop of the church has not commented on the "sign from God", which comes days after violence on the island over the high cost of living.
