The CEO of The Catholic Church Inc.(TCCI), Pope Benedict, reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS as he started a visit to Africa today.
The good Pope had this to say,"It (AIDS) cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem. The only solution is two-fold: the first is a humanisation of sexuality, a human, spiritual renewal which brings with it a new way of behaving among people and, secondly, a true friendship, especially for those who are suffering, a willingness to make personal sacrifices."
As TCCI grows smaller in size due to a decrease in customers...er...members in the developed world, Africa is seen as a new vital market for converts. Unfortunately for TCCI, the condom issue is a huge sticking point as over 25 million Africans have died of AIDS in less than 3 decades and 22.5 more are living with HIV.
Some Catholic Leaders are calling for a softening of the stance against condoms, believing that married couples where one partner is infected should have the Church's blessing to use protection so that the other partner isn't infected too.
TCCI will hear none of that, of course.
Fortunately, the Catholic Church wields declining power as the years pass by...
Mr. Pope did have one issue that he spoke out on that resulted in him hitting the nail on the proverbial head. When asked about current world wide economic issues,
the Pope said,"it (the economic crisis) is a result of a deficit of ethics in economic structures."
Now THERE is a subject the CEO of The Catholic Church Inc. would know something about.
